Sitting here at home on a Saturday night with glass splinters in my fingers and possibly in or around my eye, I thought I’d listen to some Roxette on Chris G’s laptop when I realised I should try and pick the chords. I got Meals’ git and worked through it. I tried to sing it without the music first to see if I could do it blind when I realised I didn’t know any of the words so I opened Notepad and pressed play…

…and I think I’ve invented a new game. I have called it FreeFlying but other people may have already invented it and called it something else. It’s like freestyling and adlib-ing, but less creative. It’s a bit like Guitar Hero but can be done with other things, not just songs and guitar.

What you do is set something off, then you have to do something that follows the first thing, and see how well you can keep with it.

So for instance, I would press play on the Roxette song, and while it’s playing, try and type out the lyrics in Notepad without pausing the song. If it’s a song that you have heard once, or not even at all, then all the more fun. This time around, I did pretty well, since I’ve heard the song a bit. But I would love to see a someone try Informer, by Snow, especially if they haven’t heard it yet. Hardest difficulty on Guitar Hero? Pffft.

Back in 1999, I had the pleasure of going to a Slyboots gig at the Arthouse in Melbourne where I saw 9 crazy cats, cramped onto a tiny pub stage, do their punk-ska thing. I was in adolescent heaven. The next gig I saw them at they were supported by another punk-ska band that called themselves Commissioner Gordon. Their guitarist was a girl named Sharon Ryan.
